YOUR HOST · MIKE BAKER

Why I want us watching this.

I built this collection because I want people watching some of these older movies again and thinking about the future. Star Trek gives us a hopeful place to begin. Its technology is impressive, but the decisions people make are what interest me.

For this first movie night, I want you to watch The Voyage Home and ask what a future society would wish we had protected. Bring someone into the conversation. You don’t have to agree about the film to learn something from talking about it.

Why this film, now?

A story about the future sends its crew back to 1986, where humanity’s treatment of the natural world becomes impossible to ignore. Its optimism depends on people noticing a problem and taking responsibility for it. That makes it a useful first night for this collection.

You’ll meet a crew returning home after earlier adventures. Expect some references to those events, then a largely self-contained mission with humor and an environmental question at its center.

Set aside about 2 hours 15 minutes.

The film runs 119 minutes. Leave another 15 for conversation. Ask everyone this before watching: “What would a future society wish we had protected?”

AFTER THE CREDITS

Stay for the conversation.

  1. What does the crew choose to protect?

Who or what would be easy for a powerful society to overlook?

  2. Where does cooperation do more than force?

Point to a moment in the film. What makes that cooperation possible?

  3. What would we change today?

Name one decision that brings this kind of future closer. What would make it difficult?
